A Hiking Mystery - Locks on the Gate to Nowhere

Picture
My husband and I went for a 6 mile hike on the Santa Fe Trail, a setting that inspired my first published novel. The mystery today is not in my story. We've noticed a gate, detached from any fencing, standing solo in a field. It has been there as long as I remember.

What's new is the addition of a lock. And then another lock. Over a dozen random locks.

Locks on the gate to nowhere.

I probably won't write a story about the gate. The image is visual art, offering a moment to reflect and ask, WHY?

This gate reminds me of the bridge in Paris where couples put a lock on the railings to declare their devotion. Perhaps this is a local US version.

Susan, I didn't know about that custom. That makes perfect sense! Mystery solved - by a mystery author. How appropriate!

"The city of Paris started removing padlocks from the Pont des Arts, effectively ending the tourist tradition of attaching "love locks" to the bridge.
For years, visitors have been attaching locks with sentimental messages to the bridge in symbolic acts of affection. Some further seal the deal by throwing keys into the Seine River below."
